When Two Hearts Become One

He woke to a freezing mist, but he was determined to go. after all he was to be married in three days. He flung his suitcase in the pickup, jumped in , and was gone. He was doing ok ..that is until he got to Bruster. The roads were getting worse. On he crept, he had to make it to Oakley. From there he would ride the rest of the way with his brother.

He started up a hill and that is when it happened. He went into a spin and ended up in the ditch. He couldn't go back or forward. There was nothing else to do but walk to the closest house. Thank goodness for an old grain truck with chains on the tires!! The good old farmer pulled him up the hill and told him to drive slow!! Interstate was not far from here and it was clear.

The bride was getting nervous...really nervous!! Would he be ok? Would he even get here?? Not only did she have that on her mind, but she had a suprise for him!! I mean a real suprise!! She had gotten a letter a few days ago. Her grandpa had wrote that he wanted to talk with them. He was looking for a new renter!! Can't you feel the excitement!! He was getting his own farm, and she couldn't wait to tell him!! That would be his "gift" from her. Oh if he would just get here!!

Somehow she made it through Bible study. You know how it is...she was going to be a new bride, after all!!

"Why don't you come home with us and wait?" asked her Aunt Virginia "They are coming to our house after all, you know"

"Wow!! Sure!! Great!!"

Do you what it is like to wait for the one who is coming for you. the one who has won your heart completely? You wait and you wait. It gets darker and colder outside. The hands on the clock keep going around. But you still wait...looking out into the dark...looking for car lights coming down the lane.

He looked so handsome, standing there reaching into the trunk for his suitcase. And there on a hanger was his suit...the one he would wear in just two days. She was a little, you might say. bashful, all of a sudden. Was she really going to marry this man in two days? Was she going to be with him for always? Really?

As they drove toward her house, it all seemed so right. The two of them setting there side by side. Never would he drive away, leaving her standing there alone. Never again would she drive away, leaving him gazing into nothing when her car disappears into the distance.

"Oh wait...stop!!" she said to him suddenly

"Why?"

"I have something for you....just stop."

He pulled the car to a stop and she handed him the envolope. He slowly opened it...unfolded the letter...and started to read.

"Well..."

"Interesting" he says in a very quiet, easy going voice "We'll have to check it out I guess."

"What..is that all you have to say? You have a farm if you want it."

She was so excited she could hardly set in the car, but her dear "husband to be" was reading it as if it was the daily paper or something!! That is what she loved about this man. He was always so calm...so true.

The old farm house was busy with activity on Thursday. Grandpa's and grandma's... mom and dad, brother's amd sister's were all driving into the yard unloading suitcases and gifts. All the bedding was fresh and clean. The big table was spread out as far as it would go. In the kitchen , mom was cooking all sorts of goodies.

Friday dawned cold and cloudy, but her heart was excited and in love. Her beautiful dress hung there in the closet. The dress with its long puffy sleeves and the little buttons down the front. The wedding dress her mother had made. Today was the day...that long awaited day. He was about to take her into his world...his wonderful world of wonder.

It was simple...their little wedding. Just a few walked with them up those courthouse steps. Her parents, his parents, their brothers and sisters. and their grandparents.

She stood there beside her handsome husband, all dressed up in his suit and tie. Beside her stood her sister and his brother beside him. The judge was an older lady. She had them resite those vows: Through sickness or health, for better or worse, till death do us part. They stood there hands clasps together. As the judge introduced the " new" Mr and Mrs she knew that he would care for her...until death did them part.

Her dad paid the judge a whole $5.00 then all hurried to the cars and back to the old farm house. The dining room table was all decorated with this and that and a beautiful wedding cake was setting at one end.

Their sisters served the cake, dressed in their new pink dresses. They had a small meal and opened the gifts.

Soon it was time. She went up stairs to change into her "going away" dress. She just stood there for a little while....there in that bedroom that had always been hers. There on the table stood his senior picture in its little frame. She remembered when he had given her a billfold size picture and she had went out and bought a pretty frame, she was so excited. So many nights she had laid there in bed reading his short letters and holding them close as she drifted off to sleep. So many nights in her childhood, she laid there listening to the old bull frogs. She took a deep breath...walked out the door and closed it behind her. He was waiting downstairs.

Everyone was lined up outside the back door, waiting with rice in their hands. Snow was gently falling. Just at the end of the sidewalk was their car...all decorated pretty. "Old McDonald" was written across the window.

He gently took her hand and looking into her eyes asked "Are you ready?" She answered by a squeeze of his hand.

What is a "best fiend"? He is someone who walks quietly by your side, as solid as a rock. He is someone who holds you close while you cry, then looks into your face and gently wipes your tears away. He is someone who knows you inside out and still loves you no matter your fualts. He is someone who laughs with you, or reaches for your hand. He is someone who lets you know your special, without saying a word.

Some say "Its love at first sight". But other times "love grows softly". She has been walking beside her farmer for 42 years now. There has been some struggles, but generally specking all has went well. But as they grow old together, walking hand in hand....love comes softly.....

Chapter 21 Move Over----We're Coming

It was the last week in January and the building was complete. It sat just north and east of our house. Goodness, compared to our current little metal farrowing huts, we appeared to really be in business. It measured 24 x 80 and was brown in color with a white roof. Two grain bins sat at the north side. One held grain for the farrowing and one for the nursery. An auger tube ran from the bin into the building so you could fill your buckets inside. There was a large pit at the end where all the goody would go for storage. Inside, fourteen crates sat on top of slatted flooring. Seven on each side, with a wide aisle down the middle and an aisle behind each row of crates. At the end of the middle aisle was the door into the nursery. Four large pens lined both sides back there with feeders and automatic waters in each pen. This was where the baby pigs would come at three weeks to be weaned from momma. Everything about this building was brand new. There was a very important reason for that!...

The Heart Buds {Current}

She rocked back and forth there on the deck as the sun sank lower in the western skies. It had been one of those days that she was so happy to be alive. So happy to let her heart fly free in the warm breeze. She sat there wondering...what was happening to her? She had changed somehow. Oh yes she will forever be a farmers wife. She will always love the feel of wind in her hair, sunshine on her face, raindrops dripping off her nose. She will forever love to sit among the pasture grass on a warm summers night, and watch as the sun turns the western sky to oranges and golds. Or raise her face to let the moonbeams dance all around her, or thrill to the call of the coyote. She will always love the simple country life. She always loved the springtime on the farm. She loved to watch as tiny little buds popped out on a tree limb. She loved to see the pear trees spread their white cloud of blossoms against the dark blue sky. She loved to kneel there in the flower beds, take her hand and wipe...

Chapter 18 His First Big Step

I sat on a little chair there in the kindergarten room. Bret stood as close to me as he could get, curiously looking from one side of the room to the other. On my lap sat Kate, playing with my purse handle as she watched Mrs Miller move around her desk. We had come to visit with Mrs Miller. She would be Bret's teacher in about two weeks. Mrs Miller was an older lady and so very gentle. Her room was very colorful. There was an area where all colors of blocks sat in little containers. There was a larger area where a big chair sat in front and all around were books. I could picture little Bret sitting there with his friends, cross legged on the floor, all eyes on Mrs. Miller as she read them their favorite books. I was sure Bret would enjoy his days there with her and all his little friends. As we visited, Bret moved slowly away from me and cautiously around the room exploring here and there, but little Kate sat stuck to my lap. A few days later, Bret, Kate and I went to Wa...
