What Would Life Be Like If.....

This morning someone posted a quote on facebook that got me to thinking. The quote was this: "I opened two gifts from God this morning....they were my eyes."

Sometimes I am ashamed of myself. Well, maybe not ashamed, but I realize how much I take for granted. Yes...every morning I open two priceless gifts from God. When I do I see sunshine streaming in through the window. I see a small snap shot I have hanging on my mirror of a handsome farmer wearing a dirty work cap, a gray t-shirt, and a belt runs through the loops on his blue jeans. You can see the silver handles of his pliers stuck safe in his pliers holder, his cell phone in its pouch, all attached to his black belt. There is a smile on his beautiful face. I love this picture. It reminds me of how lucky I really am.

Yes, I open my "eyes" but you know something? I'm a very lucky lady! I don't only have my sight, I have all five of my wonderful senses, and I would never want to give up one of them! All five of them have brought me joy everyday of my life.

What would life be like if I couldn't feel my husbands arms around me, or hear the meadowlark call to me from the tall pasture grasses, and feel the wind on my face, or hear it blowing through the tall cottonwoods?

What would life be like if I couldn't sit by the window and count the stars up in the heavens, or walk hand in hand down the country road with my best friend, and lift my face and gaze up at the full moon and see it so beautiful way up there?

What would life be like if I couldn't feel the softness of a kittens fur, or smell the fresh bright yellow straw, or watch the first wobbly steps of a new born calf, and hear the low, soft moo of its mother as she patiently licks her baby clean?

What would life be like If I couldn't see to reach up through the green leaves and pick the black mulberry hanging there, and taste its sweetness on my tongue as juice runs down my throat? Or take a bite of homemade bread, covered with homemade strawberry jam, or crunch into a roast-n-ear covered with butter and salt?

What would life be like if I couldn't lay in bed at night, and right outside my open window I see lightning flash, I hear the thunder crash, and all of a sudden I hear rain pour from somewhere up in the heavens. Or I can look into the clouds and see there the most beautiful rainbow, and feel raindrops in my hair, or smell the fresh country air after the summer shower comes up and brightens the world around me?

What would life be like if I couldn't stand under the big blue skies, and see in the distance our great flag flying free in the breeze, or feel a tear roll down my cheek when I hear our national anthem, or watch a new bride come down the aisle, or watch a young man and lady standing so straight and tall in their cap and gown, knowing that I used to hold them in my arms, and feel their soft little hands on my skin?

What would life be like if I couldn't smell the smoke of a camp fire, or watch fireflys dart here and there, or hear the call of a lone coyote, or smell the new mowed grass?

What would life be like if I couldn't feel the little hand of a grandchild in my own, or look down on their up turned smiling face, or hear the soft melody of a lullaby?

What would life be like if I couldn't stand in the softening twilight, as the sun sets in the western skies with all its radiant crimson, or watch my new day begin as the sun just peeks up over the horizon sending its soft rays of light into the eastern skies?

What would life be like if I couldn't hear a bull frog down at the pond, or hear the low, distant whistle of the train, or the rushing thunder of water as it cascades down over the ledge, or see the vast oceans, or the snow covered rugged mountains reaching to the sky, or hear the soft "I love you" as he whispers in my ear?

What would life be like if I couldn't see the little purple flowers in a field of green alfalfa, see the little yellow butterflies darting all around, or smell the new mowed hay, or watch the hawk as it sours up in the dark blue skies, or put a small flower to my nose and take a deep breath?

Yes...everyday I wake up I am a very lucky person with a very special gift. My five beautiful gifts given to me from God.

Chapter 21 Move Over----We're Coming

It was the last week in January and the building was complete. It sat just north and east of our house. Goodness, compared to our current little metal farrowing huts, we appeared to really be in business. It measured 24 x 80 and was brown in color with a white roof. Two grain bins sat at the north side. One held grain for the farrowing and one for the nursery. An auger tube ran from the bin into the building so you could fill your buckets inside. There was a large pit at the end where all the goody would go for storage. Inside, fourteen crates sat on top of slatted flooring. Seven on each side, with a wide aisle down the middle and an aisle behind each row of crates. At the end of the middle aisle was the door into the nursery. Four large pens lined both sides back there with feeders and automatic waters in each pen. This was where the baby pigs would come at three weeks to be weaned from momma. Everything about this building was brand new. There was a very important reason for that!...

The Heart Buds {Current}

She rocked back and forth there on the deck as the sun sank lower in the western skies. It had been one of those days that she was so happy to be alive. So happy to let her heart fly free in the warm breeze. She sat there wondering...what was happening to her? She had changed somehow. Oh yes she will forever be a farmers wife. She will always love the feel of wind in her hair, sunshine on her face, raindrops dripping off her nose. She will forever love to sit among the pasture grass on a warm summers night, and watch as the sun turns the western sky to oranges and golds. Or raise her face to let the moonbeams dance all around her, or thrill to the call of the coyote. She will always love the simple country life. She always loved the springtime on the farm. She loved to watch as tiny little buds popped out on a tree limb. She loved to see the pear trees spread their white cloud of blossoms against the dark blue sky. She loved to kneel there in the flower beds, take her hand and wipe...

Chapter 18 His First Big Step

I sat on a little chair there in the kindergarten room. Bret stood as close to me as he could get, curiously looking from one side of the room to the other. On my lap sat Kate, playing with my purse handle as she watched Mrs Miller move around her desk. We had come to visit with Mrs Miller. She would be Bret's teacher in about two weeks. Mrs Miller was an older lady and so very gentle. Her room was very colorful. There was an area where all colors of blocks sat in little containers. There was a larger area where a big chair sat in front and all around were books. I could picture little Bret sitting there with his friends, cross legged on the floor, all eyes on Mrs. Miller as she read them their favorite books. I was sure Bret would enjoy his days there with her and all his little friends. As we visited, Bret moved slowly away from me and cautiously around the room exploring here and there, but little Kate sat stuck to my lap. A few days later, Bret, Kate and I went to Wa...
